Paper (Food Control, Vol. 96, April 2019, Pages 179-186, T. Pazartzi et al.):

High levels of mislabelling in shark meat – Investigating patterns of species utilization with DNA barcoding in Greek retailers

The FastGene® Optima is an allrounder and can be used in a variety of PCR set-ups.

Today we want to introduce a paper which shows the usage of FastGene® Optima ReadyMix (LS29) in the detection of mislabelled food to save endangered or prohibited species.

From fishmongers and markets, samples were collected and screened for two mitochondrial genes. The identification in the genetics database has shown that 50% of the samples are mislabelled and had an origin in protected shark species. This study shows the need of protection of customers and endangered species.

The results bare the need of DNA barcoding and controls for offered meat. FastGene® Optima ReadyMix is the perfect enzyme for this barcoding experiment, because of the great performance with templates of different tissue and species.
